Voice over accents, dialects, and authenticity

March 6, 2026 by Michele Koch

As a voice actress, one of my skills I’m proud of is my ability to do accents. It’s something that has come from both specialized coach and living in varied places like London, Hawaii, San Antonio, and Massachusetts. I’m also one of those folks who can mimic an accent by listening enough. For instance, my husband is German, and I’ve traveled enough to Germany to do a fairly authentic German accent.

And, it turns out, I’ve acquired a bit of a Texas accent since living in the San Antonio area for nearly 40 years.  But I’ve always wanted to be more “neutral”, or General American  with no discernable accent.  So I decided to work with a coach to rid myself of dipthongs and — tripthongs!  Who knew I was saying “and” like it had three syllables?  Aaaannndd.

In the end, I have succeeded in changing my speech when specs call for a neutral American voice. But I can turn on that slight twang when I need to. Aaaannnd, on a few fun occasions, I’ve been able to use those accents from England, Hawaii, Germany, and Massachusetts.

Need a voiceover actress who can speak in an accent or neutral voice that appeals to your audience? Let’s talk!
