This past May, I attended my second JMC Euro Retreat, this time in Holland at the Chateau St. Gerlach. The first Euro Retreat I attended was in Dublin at the famed K Club.
Here’s the thing. The Euro Retreat is not cheap. Usually around $8000, but all expenses paid at a top resort/hotel destination, room and all meals included for 5 days, (airfare separate) PLUS the reason for the retreat: amazing workshops with some of the best casting directors, agents, and coaches in the industry. And since these retreats are pricey, the attendance is small. That means not only did I get to meet all these great folks, learn at the various workshops, read for them, but the meals and down time meant getting to know everyone personally, creating lasting friendships and connections. Oh, did I mention that J.Michael Collins, who puts on these amazing retreats, gives attendees TWO demos of their choice. Whoa!! I’m in!
I decided to invest in the Euro Retreats because I felt it was time to up my game — and unique opportunity to invest in my voice over career that went above and beyond traditional coaching.
Don’t get me wrong. I still recieve coaching. And any voice talent worth their salt, continues to improve their craft. Side note — the demos JMCDemos produced for me, were BOTH nominated for the One Voice Awards this year!
My choice has been to participate in the Euro Retreats. But if the money for you isn’t quite there, invest in your voice over career other ways. 1 on 1 coaching, coaching classes through GVAA, Gravy for the Brain or Edge Studio. Attend webinars. Attend a conference. There’s so many conferences. I’ve personally been to VO Atlanta and One Voice in Dallas.
If you’re serious about upping your game in voice over, invest in the craft.
