Recording on the Road

June 4, 2024 by Michele Koch

Basic equipment you need when you travel

It’s so comfy to be home sweet home in my own studio.  But now that summer is full on, people are going places.  How do you record when you’re traveling or on vacation?

Travel rigs are essential when recording on the road.  You’ll need a trusted microphone, an audio interface if your microphone is XLR, headphones, and a laptop or tablet complete with editing software (DAW).

Here’s my basic travel rig:

  • Microphone:  Rhode NTG5 shotgun, (with both foam and “dead cat” covers,
  • Audio Interface: MikeHero by Audio Sigma  – packs a great punch that is small enough to fit in your pocket!
  • Headphones: Sennheiser HD23 70 – I actually won this pair at the 2023 One Voice Conference in Dallas!
  • Laptop: I use my Lenovo Thinkpad which is a bit on the heavy side, but is a beast for power.
  • DAW: Adobe Audition

So, once I’m at my Airbnb, or hotel room, I look for the quietest place, usually a small closet. Pillow forts are also a thing, which I have done. Grab the pillows from the bed, the comforter, and sit underneath.  You’d be amazed how good the sound is.

Your travel rig might look a little different, and each voice actor should decide whether to truly be on vacation and leave the equipment at home, or take their rig and knock out those auditions and recordings.

For me, I lean on the side of taking my rig. Let me know if you have a travel rig and what it looks like, or if you’re considering adding to your equipment to create a good rig.

Fun travels this summer.
